1919-1925
Pacific, Europe

Starting in 1919 and ranging through 1925, this large bound leather photo album contains an assortment of photographs. Captain Arthur Enderlin was stationed on United States ships on missions to the Pacific, Europe, Asia, and South America. The album, not sequenced in chronological time, shows us a myriad of subject matter. Captain Enderlin photographed the landscapes, seascapes, ships, and people with whom he worked at sea and at port. His images give us a unique insight into what reservists and Naval officers may have been among the few in the world to see, as they went about their duties. The more dynamic and visually successful images are the assorted portraits of his shipmates and the grand landscapes from the regions traveled.

Many of the images are slightly blurred for many reasons. The early types of roll film at this time were not as light sensitive as those today. Another factor that adds into this soft focus is from the fact that many images were taken on a ship that rocked back and forth. These attributes give his images personality and make them distinct. The size of these images range from approximately Three (3) by Five (5) inches to Four (4) x Seven (7) inches. Their quality is diminishing as many are faded, sepia toned and continually worsening since most are physically pasted to the black album sheets. On some the emulsion is being worn away from direct contact with the facing pages and most are dirtied with black fiber particles from the deteriorating paper stock. The final unique facet to the album are the numerous hand tinted postcards from Japan in the mid-1920’s.
